Hunting and Bird Dogs

"I had the privilege of shooting quail with Legh and Jenn Higgins over their beautiful Twombly setters at Olympia Bend Plantation on the shores of the Withlacoochee River in Lowndes County, GA a couple of weekends ago. A Southern boy all my life I usually hunt over Pointers and rarely get to watch the work of English Setters. The Higgins' dogs were trained to perfection, had superior noses, and were as biddable as any dogs I've ever hunted over. Fantastic dogs, people, and shooting grounds.”...  George Newbern, Mar 05, 2014

Hunters and their Twombly Setters

Brierly and her first birds

Brierly and her first birds

This shows Brierly at about 15 months old. Brierly is "quite the hunter" and "hunts so hard out of the gate"; her dad hopes she slows a bit with age!

We got a few birds but hard to find woodcock this year. Today, Brierly got a pointed woodcock and a couple of grouse!

Bonnie in Vermont

Bonnie in Vermont

It’s hard to believe that it’s barely been three months since Bonnie came into our lives. Here she is out in the field, proud of her accomplishments of the day! She is part of the family and returns the love we give her ten-fold every day, she is in her forever home with her forever family.

"I had met Corey Ford and his English Setter, Tober, in the late 1960's so I knew the qualities that Legh's grandfather, Earl Twombly, had established. My Sage, born in June 2014, is representative of the line. She is an amazingly good companion, cautiously bold, hugely affectionate, learns very quickly and easily, and is breathtakingly beautiful on point. Anyone considering a companion gun dog should reach out to Legh and Jenn Higgins, owners of Twombly Setters in Lowell, Vermont."

Dean & Grace at 5 months

Dean & Grace at 5 months

"Grace's first real Grouse hunt. She didn't point this grouse but we flushed it and I broke its wing. The bird scrambled deep underneath a brush pile and Grace dove in and I couldn't even see her tail. She came out with this bird... still alive."

Danny's first grouse

Danny's first grouse

This is Danny and Olga's Grace of Coronation. This trophy bird is Danny's first Grouse. Grace pointed at 30 yards, Danny shot with his Parker Ph and Grace trailed and retrieved the Grouse. She "seemed to come into her own today", according to Dean Romig Grace’s dad.

This is Cam with Olga's Grace of Coronation. Cam is 12 years old and got this fine bird over Grace's point, hunting in Vermont with his Grandfather. Nice work! Oh, and Grace is 5 weeks pregnant here!

Kelsey and Maddie

Kelsey and Maddie

"Maddie has been a fabulous addition to our family. Not only is she a fantastic hunter, she is a perfect family dog. Maddie loves to run, play with toys, play with other dogs and get lots of love. She loves to be with her "people". She is very smart and has learned many tricks. She is a little mischievous but she knows when we mean business. She has done well bird hunting, spending this past season in the field pointing and retrieving to hand many birds......We are in love with Maddie..."

Cider after hunting

Cider after hunting

"As you can see from the photos, Cider's developing into a handsome fellow...exactly what I was looking for. I’ve resigned myself to the fact that my nephew will be carrying the shotgun this season while I’ll be devoting all my time to Cider. I’m looking forward to it! I am more than pleased with Cider's performance so far. He's a close working dog (as advertised) and works the cover in front of me at a distance I prefer.

Dan and Indie in Maine

"I think Indie had a really good first year and got a lot of important contact with woodcock and grouse. On her first trip, the foliage was still very thick and, I think she was a little overwhelmed... By the third trip, her pointing form had really taken shape and she was winding grouse 20-30 yds out and starting to reposition as the ran ahead of her...I’m not sure if we’ll get a late-season grouse trip in but, our time this season was very productive and suggests a great future.
