Breeding and Puppies

We only breed dogs whose hips and elbows have been evaluated by the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals, or OFA. Hip or Elbow Dysplasia can cause severe pain and discomfort, compromising the quality of life for an affected animal and their family. While testing the sire and dam and only breeding ones who "pass" the OFA standard can't guarantee that all offspring will be clear of hip and elbow problems, it is the best practice to reduce risk of genetic defects.  For more information, please go to:

Who We Are - The Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA).

Many of our Twombly Setters are purchased by folks who want an exceptional companion dog for their family.  Our English setters are not droopy couch potatoes you see in some dog calendars! They are energetic dogs who enjoy running and being outside with "their people". Everyone should understand that these dogs are "people dogs" and need love, companionship and people who will take them into the world on “explorations” - not just leave them in their crate or the fenced-in yard.

Future breedings and our recent litter

Nine beautiful pups were born in Dillwyn, VA on October 9, 2019 - Blue Beltons, Orange Beltons and tri-colors. The 5 males and 4 females are happily settled into their home with their forever families. We plan a late summer/early fall breeding in 2020, so stay tuned!

From “Every Dog Should Own a Man” by Corey Ford - the "Boss" was Earl Twombly of Waterbury, VT.

"...They’re all good,” the Boss smiled. “They’re by old Duke, that I’ve hunted with for over six years.”

The boy was standing so near that he could almost touch him, and he braced his paws against the wire and tried to catch the boy’s eye. If he could catch the boy’s eye and tell him, then the boy would know, too.

Once the boy almost looked at him, but just then the older man spoke to him, and he turned.

“Which one do you like, son?” the older man asked.

The boy’s eyes moved slowly over the other pups in the yard, and finally came to him, and stopped. He looked expectantly at the boy, thinking of all the things they were going to do together......”

"So, a word about these dogs. We don't hunt and have a Twombly Setter as a pet and family member, so I cannot attest to their hunting. Our Tyger is the sweetest girl, smart, polite and just fabulous with children. She quickly became part of a family that recently dealt with the death of a beloved setter named Lily, who we will miss forever. Tyger was the perfect therapy! -Jeanette

"We do love her dearly Legh and Jenn! Thank you! Thanksgiving with family including twin 6 year old girls. They were all over Ty, trying to pick her up dancing with her, hugging her, chasing and being chased by her! She was awesome! This is the sweetest pup! Gentle, gentle dog! We love our Twombly Setter!" - Jeanette

Tuck with Londa and Gene

"He is becoming a more beautiful boy every day. Daryl, my English Setter owning friend, has interacted with Tuck several times---today he said Tuck would make a good service dog. I agree, he truly loves people and interacts well with everyone he meets. He also meets new dogs well. We attend a puppy training class each week with five other dogs plus he has met dogs at the vets office and around town. He has good manners for a young dog. He is learning his commands quickly." - Gene

Rick and Sage

Rick and Sage

My Sage, born in June 2014, is representative of the line. She is an amazingly good companion, cautiously bold, hugely affectionate, learns very quickly and easily, and is breathtakingly beautiful on point. We travel everywhere together from the prairies of Montana to the woodcock coverts of Maine, and her desire to find birds is exceptional. When we walk anywhere, people are drawn to her with the most frequent comment being, "what a beautiful dog." Sage has enriched my life beyond measure...
